This monograph examines the development of theories of eucharistic consecration in the first four centuries. It starts with the New Testament material and ends with the teaching of St Ambrose in the late 4th Century. The concluding section offers one or two practical suggestions as to how the present eucharistic worship of the Church of England could more faithfully reflect its heritage
